Almost every human culture in history has had a fascination for altered states of consciousness. Percussive rhythms and shamanic chants around a bonfire have been one way to tap into another way of being. The modern equivalent is perhaps a dance floor. That’s where Spekki Webu works his magic, whether it’s in the context of a slow and chuggy 4-to-the-floor beat, or chopped up amen breaks skipping along a 170 bpm sub rumble. Bongos, congas, and marimbas, Spekki’s music is here to make you tune in and remember. In addition to expanding your mind on the floor, he runs a label called Mirror Zone. It’s only one release deep but is surely one to lookout for in der zukunft. That was made clear after reissuing Beneath A Different Sun, a 1994 twelve inch from UK producer Memphis, who only ever put out three EPs between 1992 and 1994.
